Jana is hosting an appetizer exchange for New Year's (think along the lines of Susie's cookie exchange). Granted, my easy entry was going to be for chile con queso, but I'm back to the drawing board after Jana berated the use of Velveeta. It's all in the seasonings, though, so I may still post it for spite.
Consider this a place holder. I'll be back.
In the meantime, if you post something, please go over to Jana's and let her know. She needs help preparing for a shindig this weekend.

Chile Con Queso
| Long Version | Short Version |
|---|---|
1 1/4 lb. American deli cheese |
1 block Velveeta (the bigger one) |
*Spices (mix together) | |
Mix all together and melt in double boiler. Serve with chips. | |
Hot Crab Dip
1 lb. crab meat Mix all ingredients except cheese (gently to keep meat in clumps). Bake at 325 for 10 minutes. |

Alright, first off I berate the Velveeta mostly out of envy, as my lactose intolerance does not forgive to allow me to even EAT it! Secondly I was talking more on the lines of, heat the velveeta with salsa and there you go. Yours has zest, which is what I need!!
And I am going to go ahead and use your recipe!!
The crab dip one that is.

Oooh! I love to cook! I'll play along! I can always use new recipes. :-) Enjoy!

Poo on the Velveeta haters! Down here, it's just not Ro-Tel dip unless it contains a big block of melted plastic cheese product. Sure...we're down with the Edam and Havarti. No prob! But Velveeta's got a place in our hearts as well. And it makes a great floor wax! (not!)

So when do you add the cheese to the crab dip? Or do you eat it while the dip is cooking?
And I love CUMIN! It's my favorite spice, hands down!

Man, oh MAN. YUM! I am so stealing ALL-A-THAT, for reals!

I know you are in Alaska and all and you prolly have fresh crab meat coming out of your arse (and you better get that looked at if you do). But I would like to know, what kind of crab meat? Like real crab or that fake stuff? And if real, then from what, like cans?

jana - Definitely try it with the spices, and go with the long recipe if you insist on being a Velveeta snob. Hell, at least it ain't cheez whiz! lol
RM - yum!
wordgirl - Edam and Havarti? I love havarti, especially dill... What do you do with them? Make queso?? Loves me some cheese, I do.
Dima - I'll update later. Sprinkle the cheddar on top before baking. Sorry! (Your idea is good, too, though!)
cat - Enjoy!
Amy - If your grocery doesn't sell lump crab meat, imitation works just as well. I won't say it's as good, but it'll get the job done. (Our grocery in Texas even sold it - Phillips Restaurant brand - fresh.)

And Amy, after the last post, I'm ignoring your backside reference.

So let me get this straight...Cheez Whiz is a step below Velveeta, or does Kraft factor in somewhere in between?
And I'm not the snob...Velveeta hated me first, doing nasty things to my digestive system!!! :) LOL
I do believe we have crab meat here in Illinois, too.

jana - That is correct (about the Velveeta/Cheez Whiz class system).
There's a pill for that stomach issue, you know. ;)

I didn't do Susie's Christmas cookie exchange because our house was too crazy to even make virtual cookies last week.
But when I saw this post, my first thought was "ooh, my mom's crab dip!" And then I saw yours, and that it is very similar (with the horseradish), and that it even has Old Bay Seasoning in it, and decided I can't compete with that ;)

Sorry, Andrea! It's never too late for a good cookie recipe, though!

Jana - I love me some Velveeta. But, I was never aware that it had any ACTUAL cheese in it. Just thought it was a lab accident that benefited all of mankind and eaters of Ro-tel and Mac n Cheese :-).

Shrinking Violet - Thanks for stopping in! You're right. "Cheese" and "cheese product" are not synonymous.
