Since first hearing about this on Ally McBeal (thanks to Kalki who long ago told me that), I've been determined to at some point figure out what my personal theme song was. That time, my dears, has come.
Of course, my brain is heavy after the thorough examination of possible names for the truck yesterday.
::tangent::
Did you know that every day is a holiday? Every day. I have a list somewhere. File that under the list of things to post at some point. I have the list printed out, but would rather be lazy and pull up the file.
::end tangent::
Yes. I'm digressing. Bottom line is that I couldn't figure out a theme song. Not a good one. Not one that I can live with.
In my search, I went to my old friend Google, finding a site that has a "What's Your Theme Song?" quiz. I went through it, and you know what it told me? "Walking on Fucking Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves. Now wouldn't you know that I HATE that song? If you were to ask me what songs I hate, I'd list three: "Walking on Fucking Sunshine," Prince's " Raspberry Beret" (for the simple reason that it was overplayed the one summer that I did nothing but sit in my room listening to the radio), and "I've Got a Brand New Pair of Rollerskates" by Whoever the Hell Sings That. Oh, and I guess you should add in that horrendous KILL ME NOW song by Rush called "Dog Years" or something like that (which I only heard once, but really, isn't that enough?). Whoever put that quiz together can totally fuck off.
After that failed attempt, I wracked my brain trying to think of a song that really captured me. No luck there, so I wracked my brain trying to think of the albums that really captured me, to try to work down to a single track. It's really too bad my old tapes are all boxed up under the stairs. I'd love to dig through them.
The closest I was able to come was the following lovely from The Underworld. It's called "Original Song." I've taken some liberties here with my interpretation of the lyrics. This song doesn't speak to me so much about the riches of money, but about the riches of memory and my inability to be happy with what I have. (I have severe Ifonliness. Have I mentioned that? That true happiness lies just around the corner, but it's a corner that is constantly changing. This isn't to say that I haven't found happiness in some areas of my life. My true happiness comes with self-fulfillment. If only I could handle this ADD/depression crap, whatever it is. If only I could organize myself. If only I could stick to a healthy lifestyle. If only I could meet people with similar interests. If only I could spend more time focusing on getting shit done on my lists instead of making them to ignore them.)
Update: Adding carriage returns. I can't read this straight, and I know the song.
Original Song
by The UnderworldWhen I'm alone I try to remember
all of the things I want
I get depressed, but don't give me handouts
everyone loves a trier
I would love to be lucky as you
in with the rich survivors
wouldn't complain if I was a rich man
everyone can can!
An' you want it! An' you need it! An' you love it!
We sing the original song
gimme more!
We sing the original song
gimme more!
We sing the original song
gimme more!
We sing please give it to me! Give it to me!
When I'm alone I talk to myself,
and, don't get the wrong impression!
Don't have the cash, but I got the pride
I never lay down and die
I see the pictures I know the adverts
everyone else got lucky
I got the bad deal looking around me
everyone can can!
And yes, I do talk to myself. I Google myself, too, remember? Got a problem with that?
next week: pets
----
I've been horrible about updating the archives. I will get that done soon. Even still, if you played, please let me know. And Susie? The stupid hedgehog pompom fell apart on me and pissed me off too much to try again. I will get that done this week as well. ::smooch::

I don't know the Original Song. Interesting.
Now I have Walking on Sunshine in my head. Everyone who read your blog today is going to be singing that song today.

William, you're so right. Stupid effing song!
Posted by: Hänni | 2005.10.03 at 05:49 AM
I wanna say the Rollerskating song is "Melanie." Not sure, but that comes to mind.
I shall delay my hedgehog gratification.
Posted by: Susie | 2005.10.03 at 06:28 AM
Mine is "Walking on Freakin' Sunshine," too. Oh, sorry, "...Fucking Sunshine."
Posted by: Susie | 2005.10.03 at 06:37 AM
Um, mine is walking on sunshine also. I dont get it. Walking on fucking sunshine. WTF? Maybe its a hint that I need to.
I didnt play this week, but I will next.
Posted by: lawbrat | 2005.10.03 at 07:40 AM
I would have preferred Walking on Sunshine (whooooa) to Independent Women (bleh!). I really wanted Groove is in the Heart, but oh well.
And how unfortunate is it that you hate Raspberry Beret? I love that song.
Posted by: jomama | 2005.10.03 at 08:45 AM
I don't know how I got groove in the heart, it must've been the damn bird question.
I hate Raspberry Beret too. It really was played too much. Why do they do that to us? And who the hell are these people that KEEP requesting the damn thing when it is obviously already overplayed? HUH?
Posted by: jana | 2005.10.03 at 08:53 AM
I got Groove Is In The Heart. I guess that's ok... not something I want to listen to these days but, oh well.
I had no idea you liked Underworld. My favorite Underworld songs are Dark and Long and River of Bass. Cool that you like Underworld, even if that isn't the most uplifting song.
Sometimes it's the music and not the lyrics, though, right? There are some old songs by Modest Mouse that never fail to lift my spirits or comfort me and yet the lyrics are damned depressing (if you pay attention to them).
Posted by: sheryl | 2005.10.03 at 10:37 AM
Man, I miss Ally McBeal.
Posted by: kalki | 2005.10.03 at 11:01 AM
Ah! Modest Mouse always makes me feel kind of sick thanks to an ex-boyfriend. The good news is that Seth's ex also was a fan so neither of us has any desire to listen to their music. The bad news is missing their music sometimes--the clash of misery and happiness makes it kind of cool.
Okay, I'm going to play, then switch over to Enormous Work Productivity Day. fucking Mondays. Oh and thank god I read this before logging in to that twinkle site. Now I have justification for not doing it.
Posted by: Daphne | 2005.10.03 at 11:26 AM
Mine was Walking on Fucking Sunshine too. And their site was REALLY slow. And the answer to half of those questions was NONE OF THE ABOVE. I'll have to think about what my theme song really is.
Posted by: Ern | 2005.10.03 at 12:07 PM
done. oh and I like your theme song and your introspection this week. I forgot to mention that and it's important.
Posted by: Daphne | 2005.10.03 at 12:09 PM
oh yah and one more thing Mrtl? Go out and get you a friggin copy of the Color Purple and read it RIGHT THIS SECOND YOUNG LADY.
Posted by: jana | 2005.10.03 at 01:20 PM
william - Sorry on both counts. I have "Original Song" playing.
Hänni - :(
Susie - It'll be done this week. I promise!
lawbrat - There were only about ten songs you could get. Don't put a whole lot of stock in it!
jomama - Of all of them, I like "Groove is in the Heart" best, too.
jana - TOO MUCH! The same songs replayed every hour. GAH!
sheryl - The Underworld is a band from the past, a remnant of a relationship better forgotten. I only have Change the Weather and Underneath the Radar. Seems they reinvented themselves in a direction I wasn't willing to follow with Dubbnobasewithmyheadman (or whatever). What album are your faves on?
It's definitely sometimes the music. I love The The, and thought for sure I'd be able to find a song from them for this. No dice. None speak to me in that way, and very often it is the sound.
kalki - On DVD yet?
Daphne - If the music is worth it, get over it. lol
I need to check out Modest Mouse. If I've heard them, I don't know it. They keep coming up all over, though.
Ern - Stupid site. Good luck! I'm still thinking.
Daphne - Thanks! I'll stop by first chance I get.
jana - ugh - I have a huge stack of books here I need to read, but can't get myself settled. Every time I start to read, I fall asleep. I did manage to get 100 pages of The Happiest Toddler on the Block done this weekend, though. I'm so proud of myself for that!
Posted by: mrtl | 2005.10.03 at 01:32 PM
It's is 3:30 pm and I still have that song in my head. great googly moogly.
Posted by: william | 2005.10.03 at 02:34 PM
You are so busted! Happy Birthday MRTL!
Posted by: Von Krankipantzen | 2005.10.03 at 04:16 PM
Mine was also Walking on Sunshine. Do you get the feeling they only have three or four songs in their database...
It's your birthday??!!
Happy birthday to youuuu,
Happy birthday to youuuuu.
Happy birthday dear mrrrtttlllllll.
Happy birthday to youuuuu!
Posted by: Bente | 2005.10.03 at 06:12 PM
Oh now that song's not so bad. I got "Dancing Queen" by ABBA. What's that supposed to mean? I was thinking more Beck's "Where It's At"
Posted by: laurenbove | 2005.10.03 at 06:13 PM
I want my theme song to be Paint It Black by the Stones. Not for the lyrics, but because it rocks.
Posted by: ScottyGee | 2005.10.03 at 06:51 PM
william - This is the song that doesn't end. It just goes on and on my friends. Some people started singing it not knowing what it was, and kept on singing it forever just because it is the song that doesn't end. It just goes on and on my friends...
Does that help?
Kranki - Thanks! You're late! lol
I'm so pissed about your package.
Bente - There was a list on the last page. There were about 10.
laurenbove - Yeah - chuck that Abba. That's just scary!
ScottyGee - Indeed. Good choice!

um, hello? hi. it's your blogfriend here. um, is it/was it recently your BIRTHDAY?! yes, well. i am just... speechless. and that's saying a lot. HAPPY FREAKIN' BIRTHDAY MRS. MRTL!!! :(
Posted by: RazDreams | 2005.10.03 at 09:17 PM
I took the quiz and I too got... "Walking on Sunshine". I can't stand that song, but that looks like the general feeling about it. I scrolled down to see the other posiible song results and got quite a shock. I recognized one of the men at the bottom of the page from "love happens" matches. He WAS married to a friend and former co-worker from Florida. I'm still in shock to see his mug plastered on a website. EWWWWW!
Posted by: Momo | 2005.10.03 at 09:29 PM
i got 'walking on sunshine' too. i think the quiz is a fake.
Posted by: RazDreams | 2005.10.03 at 10:18 PM
Did you just have a birthday? I have no idea what date it was on, but happy belated birthday, mrtl!
Posted by: jomama | 2005.10.04 at 09:06 AM
Raz - It was Sunday. Thanks! I wasn't really feeling it this year; didn't want a fuss. Sorry.
Momo - What are the freakin' chances of that??
Raz - It's totally a ruse. How personal can you get with only a few possible answers? I think on this song it might come down to birds.
jomama - #34. meh
Posted by: mrtl | 2005.10.04 at 09:15 AM
Happy belated birthday from me, too!
And no, Modest Mouse isn't really worth it. There's so much else out there to listen to anyway, and my tastes have changed a bit, and so you know I'm totally happy with it not being on my iPod at all.
Posted by: Daphne | 2005.10.04 at 04:30 PM
Daphne - Now my curiosity is piqued. I'll try to find a free download.
Posted by: mrtl | 2005.10.04 at 07:52 PM
I MISSED YOUR FREAKIN' BIRTHDAY?!! MOTHER-F'ING PIECE OF CRAPOLA!
(Happy birthday.)
Posted by: kalki | 2005.10.05 at 05:00 PM
kalki - moi? crapola? mer.
Posted by: mrtl | 2005.10.06 at 12:03 AM
You're not crapola, sister. Crapola is the missing-birthday situation, silly.
Posted by: kalki | 2005.10.06 at 07:55 AM
I took the quiz and mine is also "Walking on flipping/freakin/fucking Sunshine. Please please stop the music, I.can't.get.this.song.out.of.my.head.
Posted by: Kgrams | 2005.10.08 at 07:34 PM
Kgrams - Think "Rock Lobster" - ooooh wahhh! That one's in my head tonight.
